Any project that annoys your parents HAS to be good
The Explorers kicked off the 2010-2011 school year by making super-cheap musical instruments out of straws.
Along the way we investigated how vibrations create sound waves, and how these waves are transmitted through the air. We also observed how changing the length of our “instruments” (as in a trombone)or punching holes into them (as in a flute or clarinet) can change the wavelength of the sound waves, and how this relates to the changing pitch of the sounds created by the instruments. Following a round of “American Straw Idol” to choose the ultimate Explorer instrument maker, the club members took their creations home—undoubtedly to the great delight of their parents (and dogs).
